“Hmm, this lesson smells better than last week’s.”

He nodded. “Addictive. Being in here brings up all kinds of good memories for me with the smell of the leather. I think they call that association, but it’s almost like it helps me relax.”

Oh boy. “Let’s hope you can pass that on to me, because I can use it.”

He tapped the double-wide sawhorse in the middle of the room. A thick quilt-like blanket was draped over the top of it. “Come meet your horse.”

“Really?” She laughed as he nodded. “I do have a stick horse. Cool!” Vicki stepped up and patted one end. “Nice horsie. You’re about my speed.”

“That’s his ass, not his head.”

Vicki jolted upright then glared at Joel.

He grinned. “Okay, fine, until there’s a saddle down you can pick which end is which. Although, patting a horse on the rump is as good as on the head. Lets them know you’re there.”

“So they can kick you into tomorrow…” she muttered.

Joel placed a saddle on the sawhorse. “One step at a time, darling. This horse is guaranteed not to kick anyone, anywhere. Now watch. You want to learn it all, you get to start from the ground up.”

He led her through saddling her “horse”. She nearly got caught staring at his ass when he stood sooner than she expected from showing her how to tighten the cinch. She laughed when he somehow attached a set of reins to the wooden frame, draping the loose ends over the raised part of the saddle.

When he stepped back and watched her expectantly, though, she had no idea what was going on. “What?”

He gestured. “Mount up.”

“Seriously?”

“Why not? You’re scared of horses, right? Not their saddles.”

“Jerk.”

Joel flashed his smile, the one she’d started to recognize as his truly happy expression. It hit her that she was having fun. Relaxed and looking forward to whatever reward was coming at the end of this lesson.

She hoped it was more kisses.

“Fine.” Vicki stepped forward, then paused. “I thought that sawhorse was taller than usual so I could learn how to tighten the straps without bending too low but, hell, how do you expect me to get up on Goliath?”

“Same way you get on that oversized bike of yours.” He pointed to a loop of leather hanging from the saddle. “Stirrup. Put your foot in there and hop on.”

Maybe it should have been more awkward, acting like a kid and climbing on board her pretend horse, but the situation was right. The expression on his face when she pressed herself up and tossed her leg over the back of the saddle, settling into place—

Like he was proud of her. Of getting on a damn sawhorse.

She would totally take it. “How did I do, boss?”

Joel stepped beside her, and suddenly it wasn’t only a flash of pride at having climbed into the saddle making her flush. He planted his hands on her ass and rearranged her, sliding his fingers down one thigh and placing the other hand on her lower back.

Touching her? Yes, please.

“You want to sit comfy, which means not slouching too much. When the horse walks let your body stay loose and react to him swaying. That’s it.” Joel paused, and she noted with her perched this high, his eyes were only slightly below hers. “How’s that feel?”

His palm rested on her lower back, and she wiggled slightly, enjoying the rub. “Damn good.”

Far too breathy a response, but whatever.

He carried on the lesson, handing her reins. “You need to know how to use them, but guiding a horse should be more about body messages than yanking them around by the head.”

Okay, now he had to be lying. “Bullshit.”

“Not.”

She gave him a dirty look.

“I’m serious, Vicki. You don’t need reins at all with a good horse. Gentle nudges with your knees, a few words every now and then. They’re smart.”

“Great.” She shivered involuntarily. “Just what I need, an animal that’s smarter than me.”

Joel leaned in front of her and caught her chin in his fingers. “Stop getting yourself all tangled in knots.”

Too late. “Is it time for a reward, because I could go for one right about now.”

He stroked her cheek with his thumb. “You think you’ve already earned a reward?”

“Hell, yeah.”

She wasn’t going to be shy. If these were double lessons, she wanted to keep moving forward with the boyfriend stuff as well.

He leaned in, and she leaned over, and their mouths made contact. Easygoing at first as he kept the exchange gentle. Although, having the advantage of height allowed her more control. Reins abandoned, she slipped her hands to his face and held him in one spot so she could enjoy his touch. His tongue swept along hers, followed by light bites that made soft, heady noises escape from both their lips. None of the rest of their bodies made contact, but she felt that kiss in every single bit as if she was pushed up against him, naked.

When they broke apart far too early, she protested.

Joel smiled. “More later. You have to finish your lesson first.”

“More?” She wasn’t going to pout too hard then. At least this hadn’t involved as much physical work as last time. “What else?”

He had her get off Goliath—dismount—then go through and take the straps off. Coil the reins and hang them up. She eyed the saddle. “If you expect me to move that sucker, try again. I’m not sure I can lift it.”

Joel picked it up easily, returning the saddle to its spot along the wall. “Like anything else, you’ll work up to it. You’re going to practice this every time we have a lesson, and eventually you’ll find it’s not a problem.”

Vicki eyed the space optimistically. “We’re all cleaned up. Does this mean the lesson is over and we can get back to kissing?”

He laughed like she’d hoped he would before dashing her hopes. “Not yet. You’re not done.”

“Really?”

“Really. I told you a good horse doesn’t need reins, and I’m going to prove it.”

Instant heart in throat. “You’re taking me to a real horse?”

Joel turned his back on her and squatted. “Hell no, you’re going to ride me. Hop on.”

He glanced over his shoulder in time to see her expression change. From that edge of fear to disbelief to amusement.

“Seriously, you’re going to give me a piggyback ride?”

He faked a horse nicker, soft and low, and she giggled, right before she crawled on his back and wrapped her arms around his neck.

Crazy as it was, he was having the best time with her.

Joel stood carefully, adjusting her slight weight to make her sit a little higher. “You need to eat more.”

“Be quiet, horse. Now, how do I do this? How do I direct you without using reins?”

“Squeeze your legs. Harder on the side you want to turn. Lean forward to go ahead, and squeeze both legs to slow down.”

“And if I dig my heels into your sides?” She gave an evil laugh.

Joel glanced back at her. “I’ll trot.”

Her eyes widened. “Sounds scary.”

He faced the door and waited for her first command. Of course, her leaning forward meant she pressed her chest hard against his back, which was a lovely start. He stepped in a straight line, which took them out the open door of the tack room.

“Whoa,” Vicki shouted, her arms around his neck tightening in a death grip.

He jerked to a halt an inch from the wall.

She slapped his shoulder. “Stupid horse. Don’t you know not to walk into immovable objects?”

“You didn’t tell me to stop,” he pointed out.

“Yeah, well, you said horses were smart. I didn’t think you’d do a face-plant into the wood.”

Joel shoved down his laughter. “Waiting.”

She squeezed, and he twisted to the left. Moved forward when she pressed to his back. Slowly at first, then with more confidence, she guided him through the barn. They went around the stalls, in and out of the various rooms.

Vicki had him back in the clear, facing down the hallway when she chuckled.

And dug in her heels.

“Oh, darling, you didn’t do that.”

She kicked lightly again, so he held onto her legs and took off, bouncing as he imitated a trot.

Vicki shrieked in delight and clutched him tighter, fingers digging into his shoulders. Her body rubbed his with every motion. She was laughing so hard he was worried she might fall off, but the grip of her thighs stayed solid throughout.

Joel went back for another pass of the hall when a deep voice boomed from beside them.

“I’m not even going to ask…”

Vicki sucked in a gasp, Joel twirled. His brother Blake stood in the doorway shaking his head.

Vicki tucked her face against Joel’s shoulder and laughed and laughed, her body quivering as he held her in position.

“Hi, Blake.” Joel jiggled Vicki. “Hey, come on down, and say hello.”

“No,” she whispered into his neck between gasps. “Oh my God, I don’t know which is worse. Last week your dad catching us necking, or this.”

Now he was laughing as well. “Vicki, dismount.”

Blake snorted, but otherwise held his tongue.

She released her death grip and lowered her legs, helpless giggles still escaping. “I’m so going to kill you,” she warned.

Joel pulled her against his side and took a deep breath, finally meeting Blake’s gaze. “You know Vicki? Vicki, this is my big brother Blake.”

Blake tipped his head. “Nice form, only you lose points on the dismount if the horse has to tell you to get off.”

Vicki snickered. “Good thing not many horses can talk, then.”

“Vicki will be joining us tomorrow for dinner,” Joel added. “You guys need us to swing by and help bring over anything?”
